The Greenways aim to connect, in a continuous network of safe, clean, attractive, well sign-posted, well promoted and accessible footpaths, cyclepaths and bridleways to attractive, culturally and visually diverse towns, villages, parks and open spaces in the south Essex area.
Purfleet Riverside Trail A new section of cycleway in Purfleet was opened on 16 June 2005 near the No 5 Magazine, Centurion way, Purfleet.
The new route consists of a mile of traffic-free cycling and walking route and a toucan crossing. Later in the year, the route will be extended to the RSPB reserve at Aveley, Wennington and Rainham marshes and in the longer term there are plans to extend the route further along the Thames riverfront and along the Mardyke valley.
The opening of the Royal to Iron Bridge Riverside Cycleway marks the culmination of several months work in Purfleet by Sustrans, in partnership with Thurrock Council who managed the works.
In Purfleet the completed route includes paths through Spider Park and following the Mardyke and the Thames. This also links through the Garrison Estate to Purfleet primary school, where children can now take advantage of a safe crossing on Tank Hill Road on their daily journey to and from school by foot or bike.
In 2005 Sustrans celebrates 10 years of the National Cycle Network. By September of this year 10,000 miles of Sustrans flagship project will be opened.
Apart from the Greengrid Partnership, other partners for this project include: Rail link Countryside Initiative which supports environmental projects in the channel tunnel rail link corridor
Cleanaway Mardyke Trust which supports projects in the vicinity of the Cleanaway landfill site in the Mardyke valley.
