‘Liveability’ and‘quality of life’ are extremely important for people who live, visit and travel through south Essex, but business also thrives in places where people feel comfortable and healthy.

High quality environmental infrastructure in turn promotes high quality development and vice-versa.

High quality environments yield, over time, higher property values.

Ways to ensure the future maintenance and caring for places can be captured back from part of that rise in value, to ensure there is enough money to pay for creating a legacy for future generations. Thames Gateway South Essex will survive as a high quality, attractive place to live, work and play with the Greengrid network underpinning the whole enterprise.

This is not cosmetic. Spaces must embrace the concept of the ‘working landscape’, of placing a value on ‘environmental functions’ performed by natural structures such as flood risk management, water cleansing through reed bed systems, reduction in urban ‘heat island’ temperatures by widespread tree planting, promotion of healthy living through preventative health-care, and many more.

Here are some of the first Greengrid projects. You should be able to follow their progress over the next six months, if not on the ground, then via this website. Visit them on-line every now and then and you should see the difference.
